Legal Question in Family Law in Connecticut

I have 2 daughters and a court order that the father has to pay their insurance and 1/2 all bills related to the children. Well he has not paid for the insurance in over 2 years. I knew he was having a little money troubles so I just did what was best for my girls and paid for the insurance myself. Thinking when he got back on his feet he would pay me back. I have made several attempts to get repaid at least some of the money with no avail.

Back in Dec 2007 both girls had braces put on and the doctor issued a payment plan. They subtracted the $1,250.00 per child in insurance payments and then divided the remaining balance between us. Here we are in 2010 and he has defaulted on his part of the ortho bill. He said he is going to claim bankruptcy and now the doctor is saying I have to pay the bill or he will come after me because I have a job.

First can the father just stop paying for everything and second can the doctor come after me for the balance and attach my paycheck?

The doctor can come after you. The doctor is not "bound" by the court order, only the father is. Therefore, you must file a motion for contempt with the court and force him to pay his share of everything. He can not discharge monies owed for the children's expenses in bankruptcy. This means that although he can discharge the ortho's bill he can not discharge reimbursement to you for that bill.

You should work out an arrangement with the orthodontist for the entire bill, then you need to take the father to court to force him to pay his share to you.
