Legal Question in Family Law in Connecticut
10 Years ago I was divorced in the state of New Hampshire, at that time I did not request to go back to my maiden name. I have been living in Connecticut for the past 10years and now want to go back to my maiden name. I have spoken to the courts in both Ct and New Hampshire and NH says I have to change my name in Ct and Ct says I have to change my name in NH.
All I want to know is how to I go about changing my name back to my maiden name.
Thanks. Jill

I can't advise you on New Hampshire law, so I don't know whether New Hampshire is an option. You should go down to the probate court in the town where you live and speak to a probate clerk. I believe you can file an application in the probate court to change your name here in CT.
The other option is to file an action in the superior court to change your name, but I believe it may cost you more money than the probate court. You may want to check on this.
You don't need to change your name in your divorce action, although that is an option. If you were to do so in CT you would have to register the New Hampshire decree of divorce in CT and once you do that (and serve your former spouse that you are registering it) you could probably file a petition to change your name in CT in the New Hampshire divorce now registered in CT.
