I am a 42 year old professional making about 55,000 per year. I have been married 17 years and have 3 kids, all under age 9. I have one house in CT worth 350,000 that is all paid off. We have a second house on cape cod that is worth about 350,000 with a 80,000 mortgage. I have 130,000 in stock in my own name. I inhereted the house we are in now. I put my wife thru law school with my inheritance. she works part time making 45K and has about 65,000 in assetts in her own name. What is the likley split of assets and what am I lloking at in support and/or alimony?

I need a lot more info, especially about how and when the houses were acquired. Your putting your wife through law school also may have a major impact on what I would estimate regarding how hard you might get hit. If she's making 45K part time, your alimony picture is not all that dismal, but I'd need to sit with you for a (free) consultation to be able to give you a sensible prediction. Call me at 860-233-6336 to set up a time to come in.

I agree with Attorney Heffernan. I need a lot more information to give you a better picture. Some of the factors include when assets are acquired, amount of money you brought into the marriage, you and your wife's earning capacity, who will have custody or whether shared is an option, etc. One thing for sure, if your wife becomes primary custodian (as opposed to 50/50) you will definitely have a child support obligation and both of you may, in fact, be responsible for their college. You need to sit down with a lawyer and discuss the details. Nevertheless, NO ONE can afford to get divorced.

For a thorough response and analysis, I will need additional information from you. As you may know, there are many factors considered when determining how assets will be divided and how much child support will be paid. To begin with, I will need to know when and how assets were acquired. On the child support issues, there are set guidelines for child support for households with a certain income. I would enjoy the opportunity to meet with you to discuss your case and provide more information on the child support guidelines. I offer a free initial consultation and my attorney's fees are reasonable. Please contact me at your earliest convenience to discuss this matter. I can be reached 24 hrs/7days a week at (203) 792-0070 or by e-mail.
