Legal Question in Family Law in Connecticut

Assest

I own my home and it is in my name only. If I marry, would I have any financial liability for any debt my husband might bring to the marriage? Also if he should be involved in an accident and was sued, could a lien be put on the house?

Re: Assest

You would not be liable for his debts brought to the marriage. Generally, your property is not subject to payment of his liabilities. There is one area you should be aware of, however: spouses are required to provide each other with basic "necessities". That is, you are responsible for his food, shelter and medical care; so if he, for example, got in a car accident and needed medical care, the hospital could come after you if it provided him care and there was no, or inadequate, health insurance. If the accident was his fault, and he had inadequate auto insurance, the other party could not come after you, however (unless it was your car he was driving).
