Legal Question in Family Law in Connecticut

name change for a minor

My daughter is 14 yrs, she wants to change her last name to my husband's last name. I asked my ex-husband to sign the necessary documents, but refused. He has been an absent parent from my daughter's life and is not giving child support. Is there any way I can still change her name without his consent?

Re: name change for a minor

You can go to the probate court to change the name. If all you say is true (absent father, no child support, daughter wants the name change), the court may allow the name change over the father's objection. Why not hit him for child support at the same time? Different court, but you could have him served at the probate court hearing if he shows up.
