Legal Question in Family Law in Connecticut
Can he do that??
My child's father and I only dated for a short period of time before I found out I was pregnant. When I told him, he broke things off. The baby was born very prematurely and the father does not want it. He wants to give up his rights. Can he do that?

Not with out court approval. I assume that he has admitted paternity, if not, you should speak to social services or the family support division of the Superior Court to see if they will take the necessary actions on your behalf or contact a lawyer. Then, there is the question of support and medical expenses. If he has not been ordered to pay support, pay medical expenses or provide medical insurance, an action should be brought with the paternity action or seperately if paternity have been admitted or determined. You should speak to the Social services, the support division of the Court or an attorney as soon as possible. He has a duty to support and cannot just escape that by giving up his parental rights. I suggest you see an attorney for a consultation. Many family lawyers will not charge to the initial consultation. There is a lot of money involved in raising a child to 18 years, and, as a mother, you have to protect your child. Tom Noonan
