What should the typical attorney fees be to handle an estate after the person dies?

It depends entirely on the size and complexity of the estate. If the estate involves real estate, brokerage accounts, bank accounts, retirement accounts and a large number of beneficiaries, and perhaps has to file both a state and a federal tax return, it can get pricey. Usually not more than 5% of the gross estate, though. It's usually billed on an hourly basis, with $200/hour fairly predictable.
