Legal Question in Family Law in Connecticut

My fiance wants to adopt my daughter

My fiance would like to adopt my daughter. She does not have a biological father in her life nor one on her birth certificate. He has been in her life since she was two and the only man she has known as a father figure. I am worried if any thing was to happen to me she would be taken from her only family. (We have other children together) Will there be issues to have him adopt her? Do we need a lawyer? Is it simple paper work or a more complex process? Any information is very appreciated.
