Legal Question in Family Law in Connecticut

Financial sepperation from wife

A friend asked for help finding this out.

He is looking to divorce his wife, but she has major spending problems. We would like to know if there are any steps he can take to protect himself before the divorce proceedings start. For example, if they have joint credit cards, what actions can he take to prevent being stuck with all the purchases she is likely to make in the event of physical sepperation?

Cancel any cards she has signatory powers over. If it's a true joint card (not only are both able to use it, but also both are equally liable on it) he won't be able to cancel the card, but he can write to the card issuer (certified mail) that he will no longer be responsible. That doesn't always work; he'll have to read his most recent cardholder agreement (you know, the one he threw out as soon as he opened the envelope).

Any cancellations of cards, insurance policies, bank accounts, etc., must be done BEFORE PAPERS ARE SERVED. There's an automatic order preventing such closures and cancellations once papers are served. The first thing she's going to do, however, is to seek temporary alimony, so don't heave too big a sigh of relief just yet.
