keeping assets

I,m married 9 yrs. I had a building lot given to me 7 yrs. prior to being married. It is listed only in my name in the tax records. Can my wife attach this for an asset?

As long as you acquired the asset prior to the marriage, and your wife did nothing to improve the asset, you would most likely be able to keep the asset. However, keep in mind that she may be entitled to any appreciation in its value during the marriage. Finally, when a court fashions an equitable distribution of the parties' assets, it looks at the entire estate of both parties along with many other factors to determine who gets what. There are no guarantees.
