Trying to get my kids back

My ex has an attorney, I can not afford one, I was evicted from my apt and staying with friends for 6 months, in which time i gave up primary custody to my ex, under the verbal agreement he would give it back when i got on my feet again, i have currently moved into my own place, and am seeking custody back and he is fighting it, do i have a case?
