Legal Question in Family Law in Connecticut

Long term marriage- can I afford to get divorced?

19 year marriage, 3 children. 1 House in West Hartford worth about 550k with 225k debt. 1 house on Cape Cod worth about 450k with 70K debt. I have 25k in card debt, she none. She patient with major depression and undiagnosed (falling down nightly) alcoholic. I have my own fleas as well.

Assets in her name are about 80k in a returement plan from former employer, 10k in savings, and maybe 20k else. I have about 100k in stock account in my own name, 40k in an IRA, and 12k in a roth. The houses are held jointly.

our incomes are about the same. I am self-employed. We are both attorneys. (I paid for her law school with my inheritance).

How grim is my picture? I would love to get out of this but I would really like the house as I cant afford another place plus cover my debt and pay child support. I pay all the west Hartford house expenses. We rent at the cape and she pays most of that now.

Any idea how it might shake up? Honestly, I would like primary custody of the kids as she can be a loose cannon but that's just my opinion and I dont want to second guess the opinion of someone who practices in this area of the law. Thank you.

If you earn about the same, probably no alimony. Assets will be split equally. If either brought assets into marriage they'll get it back before split. Her physical problem might mean $1/year alimony to both to protect future problems. Asset split can be a true 1/2 of each asset to each, or a totaling of all assets and a division of assets to give each the same bulk amount. Callme and I'll explain - no charge for initial. I'm in the Hartford book. John Heffernan
