Legal Question in Family Law in Connecticut

Is my Marriage valid?

We were Married in B.C Canada, on June 16,2000. When we got back to Connecticut we never told Town Officials (Town Hall) We always Filed our Taxes as Single and never had Joint money or Property, Children, Etc.I heard that I had to Tell the U.S that I got Married in Canada. I'm asking because my Significant other and I broke up, so where am I in terms of a legal Divorce?? Can You shed some light? Thank- You

Re: Is my Marriage valid?

First of all, just because you are married does not mean you have to do any of the things that many married people do, i.e. file taxes jointly, have children together, pool your money together, etc. You don't even have to live together.

I am curious as to who told you you needed to tell the U.S. you were married. (such as the town hall.I doubt they care)

So unless I am missing something (which is very possible!) I do not think you need to tell anyone you got married, even a relative, to make the marriage valid.

In my opinion, if you split up, you need to get a divorce to be "unmarried."
