Legal Question in Family Law in Connecticut

Mortgage payments

Last year I bought a house with my girlfriend. We split the mortgage payment 50/50.We recently split up and I moved out. Both of our names still appear on the mortgage statement. Am I still legally responsible to pay my half of the mortgage payment even though I no longer live in the house?

Re: Mortgage payments

Unfortunately, you and your girlfriend are both jointly and severally liable - in English, that means the bank can go after you for the entire mortgage amount, or after your girlfriend for the entire amount, or after the two of you. If you believe your relationship is over and you want to be free of liability for the mortgage (and I would want to be), your options would be (1) for your girlfriend to refinance on her own, if she can, (2) for the two of you to cooperate and sell the house and hopefully make enough to pay off the mortgage, and (3) if she does not want to sell, for you to file a lawsuit to force the sale of the house, which will work but will probably result in a lower sales price because it would be a forced sale. Feel free to call or email me for more information.

Uh yeah...you are a debtor on the mortgage ...why would you think you don't owe the money despite where you live?
