Legal Question in Family Law in Connecticut

my mother put a $160.000 addition onto our home and lives in it, we aren't getting along and she wants me to buy her out so she can leave but wants the full value of her expenses put into it.the house is in mine and my husbands names and also the yearly property taxes. should i contact a bank for an appraisal or hire a lawyer first.

You should contact an appraiser, but the appraiser need not have anything to do with a bank. Since you all agreed that that was the arrangement and now it is not working out, it's only fair that she get a reasonable sum for her portion of the house that she expended.

You may need a lawyer if you all can not agree on a fair amount for the buyout, but the starting place is an appraiser.
