Legal Question in Family Law in Connecticut
owners rights
the problem concerns two cousins of mine, one whom is the mother of a child who lived with my husband and i for the 1st yr of his life. these two cousins come from a very dysfunctional family. the cousin whom is the mother (tho exceedingly eccentric) of the child and i get along fairly well and have made sure that this child maintains a good, strong, and stabilizing relationship with my husband and me. all three, the mother, child and aunt live in the same house - mother and child live downstairs, aunt lives upstairs in the ''family homestead'' (owned by five siblings).
the aunt, has a volatile personality, and resents our/my connection.
the child will have a 5th birthday party, there, and the aunt threatens to call the police if i attend. i did attend last year, and she did not come downstairs for much of the party, but eventually did. i thought we had made progress, but am afraid the extent of the resentment and volatility is extreme.
i believe it is important to attend and not submit to the intimidation for all concerned. on the other hand, i don't want to attend if she could call police. i believe that if she could not legally do anything, she would not be a problem.
i would desparately appreciate your legal advice.

Re: owners rights
You state that if she legally could not do anything she won't be a problem, yet only she can say whether she will be, or not. I believe that since you cannot control what she will do, it may be best if you did not attend, rather celebrating with the child in a different way.
