When you ask whether grandparents have "rights" to their grandchildren, I will assume that you mean "rights to visitation or custody."

The answer, unfortunately, is not a simple one and requires much more time and space than this website. However, for grandparents to obtain a court order granting them visitation and/or custody, they have a somewhat difficult burden to meet. Having a grandparent/child relationship which may be considered a common one, is not enough in most circumstances.

Our CT Supreme Court and our Legislature have outlined specific criteria which must be met in order for grandparents to win a custody or visitation order in this state. You should consult an attorney regarding the specific facts of your situation so he/she can evaluate your chances.
