Unusual custody child support

When one parent who makes little or no income has physical custody of one child and the other parent has physical custody of the other child how is child support computed?

Generally, in a "split" custody arrangement, we calculate each parent's child support obligation based upon the number of children the other parent has custody of. Then we subtract the lessor from the greater. The recommended current support order shall be this amount payable by the parent whose original amount is greater.

If both parents have custody of the same number of children, then, in many circumstances, the parent earning the greater amount will pay the other parent. This assumes that income is not "imputed" to the parent who is earning less.
