Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Connecticut

Do I have to appear in person for a hearing?

I received notice of a lawsuit and filed

the answer. In the meanwhile, I had

a lot of personal issues going on and

for my children's well being and our

safety had to move out of state. So

months and months late I get a

notice of a hearing that is 2 days

away....problem 1 is that it is 2 days

notice. The other problem is I quit

my job moving and haven't been able

to find a job since I moved 6 months

ago. I am the sole caretaker of my

young children and have no job, no

transportation, and no way to go

back to the other state...Seriously, I

have $41 to my name. I don't want

to get in trouble and I want to defend

myself because the whole case is just

wrong to begin with. Is there any

way to move my case to my new

state or to do it over the phone or in

writing? Please help!

If you do not have a lawyer, you have to appear. You can obtain a continuance for another court date if you cannot appear. If you need help, you can email me at [email protected].

No. Never could. Once you answer in a court, you're almost always stuck there. Most judges don't do lawsuits by phone. You could ask, but expect the court to say no. Good Luck.
