Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Connecticut

problem with landlord

After signing a lease on 3/06/09 I found out that this women is not the owner of the house, Her husband is the owner and they are in court. On the lease, she signed his name. We are to move in May 1 and through the month of april, I've painted and cleaned the apt. she said she'll fix some of the things but has not done any fixing. Now I cant get in. Leaves me locked out. She was going to give me a key last week, then changed her mind. Cable guy came, couldn't get in. I have to wait outside her house, and she refused to open her door. I have to hide then see her run into car and drive off.

my apt where i live has been rented out. we have to leave but also need to move our things into apt. As soon as I cleaned and painted, now I can't get in. I'm given a run around. Things need to be fixed including a missing window. and she also has many things of her own in the apt.

What is the date in which I get a key? Can she sign her husband's name. They are getting a devorse and he's the owner of the house. Can he throw us out?

thank you

Milagros

Re: problem with landlord

In my opinion, I don't think you have a valid lease. If the woman did not own the house, then she didn't have the authority to enter into the lease. Furthermore, she signed her husband's name and unless she had a power of attorney to do so, I don't think it's a valid signature.

You didn't mention if you paid her any money. Nevertheless, I think you need to look for another rent.
