Can I break a contract with my real estate agent and then sell direct to a buyer?

Not unless the broker agrees. You probably signed a listing agreement with the agency. They get the commission if they were the procuring cause during the term of the listing agreement. If you could simply cancel the contract and then sell to someone they brought to the property, then everyone would do just that. The listing agreement is drafted to avoid that.
