Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Connecticut

Lease

Ihave a parent that has been deemed unable to live alone by her doctors. Ihave made this known to my landlord with documentationand her need to reside with me. my apartment is not handicap accessible i have asked to be let out of my lease pending these circumstances to find other housing that is accessible. i was told that that is impossibleand if i break my leasei will loose my sec. deposit and would have to pay the rent until the apartment rents again. can they do that after taking my security deposit which is fine with me i just need to move and cannot afford to pay two rents?

Re: Lease

They can do that, although by law they must make reasonable efforts to re-rent. Also, if they take you to court, a judge is likely to be sympathetic to you. Depending on how many units there are in the building, they may have to make it handicapped accessable. Also, you might be able to call the housing inspector to see if there are any housing code violations. If there are, you might be able to break the lease.
