Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Connecticut
I've been renting for the last 25 years in a house previously owned by my family but that was lost to public auction. Bought at the auction by a business associate of my dad. I've been paying the rent in cash (no lease or paperwork, just a gentleman's agreement originally drafted between 2 men that have been dead for some years) and the present landlord (my dad's associate's wife) is threatening eviction because I've been witholding the rent for 3 months until she makes the repairs to the house that are sorely needed (borderline unlivable conditions). How long do I have before I'm homeless? Where can I turn to for legal advice?

Have you been served with a notice to quit? You probably have more time than you realize. However it sounds as though you have some very good defenses to an eviction. I think an attorneys help would likely insure your continued residency at your domicile. Contact us for more information.
You first need to file/make a complaint with the health department in your local municipality. They should send someone out to investigate and then enforce the local building code.
As soon as 21 days have passed since you made the complaint, you should go down to the housing court in the district where you live and file an action for housing code violation. You can deposit the rent monies into the court pending the action and pending the landlord making the premises liveable.
