Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Connecticut

My son was given a 1985 quad about a year ago from a family friend. It needed alot of work. Now the two families have had a falling out and they are asking for the quad back. The thing is my son and husband have put alot of time and money into fixing it. About $800. Can they legally take it back? There was no bill of sale they just gave it to him.
