Tenant/Landlord rights

Would a verbal contract (with witnesses) hold up against a lease agreement? My landlord agreed to allow me to give a 2 month advanced notice before vacating, but now that the time has come he is taking back his agreement. My new lease starts as of Nov. 1 and I have to move in by then. I told my landlord with in the two months, but he still expects my lease to be paid off.

The written lease controls unless (which I doubt) it contains a provision that it can be orally amended. You can leave the apartment early but you are still contractually obligated to your landlord to pay rent until he can re rent the place on account of your breach. He must use due dilligence to re rent. Good luck
