Inheritance issues

I am a Canadian citizen with legal US resident status. My DH is an American. A friend told us that if my husband should die the kids and I could lose up to 65% of what he has left for us due to inheritance taxes. This same person said the only way to avoid this is to become an American citizen.

Is this true?
