Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Connecticut

Mother dies with no will

My Mother recently died with no will. She lived in Connecticut with a roommate; no roomantic involvement. My Mother verbally promised her posessions to my sister. Roommate now says everything is his. Can we have access to her residence to retrieve her posessions?

Big problem. It's hard to prove who owns what when you're talking about things that don't have a formal certificate of title. Cars, houses, boats, all have some kind of title certificate to identify the owner. Couches, TV's etc., don't. Some personal items (like photo albums, high school graduation diplomas, etc.) are easy; pots & pans aren't. Banks accts, stock certs etc., are not the problem, I assume; it's personal property. If you really want the authority to get into the apartment to see if you can identify stuff as hers, you'll have to go to the local Probate Court in Conn and open up an estate for her, get appointed as the fiduciary and get a court order to go in. Otherwise you're pretty much out of luck.
