If this happened in Delaware, giving a police officer a false name would be charged as Criminal Impersonation, which is a misdemeanor. Signing a ticket or a finger print card or court papers with the false name would be Forgery 2nd and is a felony. There are other charges which could also be brought depending upon the circumstances. The maximum penalties for both of the above offenses involves jail. The likelihood of jail depends upon the persons prior criminal record and/or circumstances under which a false name was given. These charges would be in addition to whatever charges they were originally charged with. They should really contact an attorney in Delaware and discuss this matter with them and retain them as sometimes plea deals to lesser charges can be made with the prosecutor.
