Legal Question in Family Law in Denmark

Child custody U.S. / Denmark

I live in the U.S. and my 8 year old son was born in Denmark and has been living in Denmark full time since birth with his Danish mother. I have traveled there to visit, and she has traveled here to visit as well during the past 8 years. Now that he is getting older, I am hopeful to establish more formal custody arrangements. As a result of this, his mother has not returned my phone calls, emails, or letters from me and I have not spoken to my son in 3 months. I believe she fears that I am wanting some custody or more formal visitation arrangements (which I do). Can I ask for him to spend summers with me in the U.S.?, Holidays?, etc? I currently have 50/50 joint custody of two children from my first and only marriage. This danish woman was never my wife, and is a Danish citizen. My son was born in Denmark but has dual citizenship. What are my legal rights as a U.S. citizen? Thank you.
