Legal Question in Business Law in District of Columbia

change owner on car title

I cosigned on a car for my son. I am in Texas. He is in Washington DC. The car has been paid off. The title, with both our names is in my possession. I would like to have my name taken off, then send him the title. How can I accomplish that without his involvement?

Re: change owner on car title

You should be able to sign the back of the title conveying your interest in the vehicle to your son so that he is the sole owner.

Your son should then be able to take this title to the DC Motor Vehicle Department and secure a new title that is only in his name. (You could check with this agency to see whether they could process this kind of transaction without involving your son and with you sending the signed vehicle title directly to them and requesting that they reissue a new title directly to your son. There would probably be a nominal fee involved which would need to accompany the title.)
