Legal Question in Consumer Law in District of Columbia
Service exceeded estimate cost
I needed to have a tv mounted to the wall and also an entertainment shelf mounted. Best buy would mount tv for $159. I called an electrician about coming in before hand to do the electrical-the electrical socket needed to be moved on the wall behind the tv. The electrician told me one of the major things they did was in home theater installation and that they could mount both the Tv, the entertainment center, do the electric and hook everything up. The owner gave told me they should be able to do the job in 2 hours. I also gave the owner the name of the products (the mounting, the entertainment unit-both cost total of $300). He said no problem so I told him I would cancel best buy coming out since the price seemed fare -for two hours $520. Well the guys that came out to do the job spent most of their time just figuring out what to do-reading the instructions-they were there for 7 1/2 hours and charged me $2377.30 based on their time. I wrote them a check-I was upset. I spoke to a few people who advised put a stop on check and dispute the excess charge. I tried to call the owner twice-leaving a message the second time. I put a stop order on the check but I'm concerned since I've never done this before. Please advise me. Than

Re: Service exceeded estimate cost
It appears unclear from you question the nature of your contract (if any)with this owner, whether there was anything in writing which you agreed to and the terms therein or whether everything discussed and ostensibly agreed to was merely oral and did not even go beyond an estimate of likely costs.
In any event, a cost overrun of some $1800 for this particular job would seem clearly excessive and very likely should rightly be disputed.
