You may consider first filing a police report so that criminal charges are brought against the thief. Sometimes criminal penalties can include restitution for the victim. Once you file a criminal complain, you can either retain an attorney to file a civil lawsuit to recover the funds or you can file one yourself. Best of luck.
The above does not establish an attorney-client relationship and is instead for informational purposes only.
