Legal Question in Criminal Law in District of Columbia
My fiance was found guilty on three misdemeanor charges in washington, DC. Each carries a sentence of 180 days. The Judge sentences him to serve each charge consectutively that results in 18 month jail sentence. We read that legally, if a ruling could result in more than 6 months jail time that the defendant has a right to opt for a jury trial. Would this apply to his case even if it was 3 charges carrying 6 months consecutively?

Your fiance likely had a right to a jury trial, but the right may not be automatic. In other words, depending on the situation, your fiance may have had to affirmatively request a jury trial. Was your fiance represented by an attorney? I STRONGLY recommend that you consult with a DC criminal defense attorney about the specifics of your fiance's case.
