Legal Question in Criminal Law in District of Columbia

Making a copy of a Fedral ID Card

Is it illegal to make a color copy of the front of a Federal ID Card? The copy was made of the front of the card in color with a copier onto plain paper.

I know 18 USC contains several foreboding statements about falsely making, using forged documents etc.

Background: the Fed ID card was copied along with my passport, and DL for records in case I lost my wallet or briefcase. Subsequently the copy was noticed in my wallet at a security check point and confiscated with a stern warning that one is not allowed to copy a Fed ID.

Make sure that in the future such copies are not so readily avaliable for inspection by such security obsessed officers who may actually derive satisfaction from confiscating papers and doling out stern warnings.
