Legal Question in Criminal Law in District of Columbia
We were staying at a hotel in Washington DC last week and the last day of our stay we had an electronic item stolen. We believe, of course, that it was the cleaning woman, as she was the only one in the room. We are back in Los Angeles, and we are dealing with the Hotel Security manager who is performing an investigation, but we need to know what recourse we have, as we are being told the cleaning woman has been working there 27 years, and they are basically defending her, rather than considering the fact that our item is missing and she took it.

If you are now back in Los Angeles and this theft allegedly occurred in Washington DC, you are now (in my opinion) as a practical matter without any viable recourse since your claims realistically cannot be criminally nor even civilly pursued in DC without the complainant(you) being within or near that jurisdiction.
