Legal Question in DUI Law in District of Columbia
Federalism and a DUI mess
I was charged wtih a DUI in KY as a student, but I was a TN resident at the time. I then moved to VA for a new job where I bought and registered a car. A few months later I plead guilty in KY and subsequently had my TN license revoked. I still have that license for identification since I can't get a replacement for the time being. After the license was revoked I moved into DC. I now only drive when and where I have to - no more than 15 miles a day if at all. It is an absolute economic necessity at times (work). I can't register my car in DC until I have a DC license, but can't do that until I'm good with TN, and that can't happen until I complete my probation with KY in October. I'm on track to do that and haven't been pulled over or even considered drinking and driving. I just recently renewed (August) my car registration in VA to keep the car ''legal'' - that is to keep me from being pulled over for an expired tag. Again, I have to drive at times and I can't afford to be pulled over. I am wondering though, what kind of consequences might I face if merely pulled over for a minor traffic violation? Names of states may or may not have been changed as one last layer of confidentiality.

Re: Federalism and a DUI mess
You could be charged with driving with no permit, driving on a revoked license, or something similar, and be arrested. Then you go to court and could potentially face jail time. For a first offense driving suspended, however, you may likely get probation or just a fine. I don't know about VA law, but I understand they are much more strict, so if I were you I WOULD NOT get caught driving in VA. MD is similar to DC as long as you're getting caught in Prince Georges or Montgomery county.
