Can an attorney stop a litigation if the client can't afford the legal bills moving forward?

The attorney cannot stop the litigation, but the attorney may refuse to do any more work for that particular client. The client will be forced to find a new lawyer that he can afford or proceed on his/her own. Most lawyers do not work for free.
