Legal Question in Family Law in District of Columbia
child custody relocation to europe
I am a Norwegian woman currently
residing and working in the US on a
visa tied to my employment. I am
pregnant with my American
boyfriend who is a US citizen. What
would happen if we were to break up
and I wanted to relocate to my home
country, Norway, with the child? The
child would have dual citizenship. The
father would want to be stated on
the birth certificate. Is it likely that
the court would rule in favor of the
mother as long as the father could
see the child a couple of times a
year? Or is it likely that I would get
stuck in the US as a single mother?
My boyfriend has a son from a
previous marriage for whom he has
joint custody and would need to stay
in the US. Also, what would happen if
we got married before or after the
child is born and then were to get
divorced? I have no other children,
am very highly educated and
financially independent. My home
country, Norway, offers excellent
benefits for parents including high
quality low cost daycare and
healthcare. My boyfriend also is
financially independent and educated.

Re: child custody relocation to europe
Your question(s) involve too many speculative factors to provide any reliable answers for this scenario(in my opinion) other than to state that as the child's natural mother, you would be free to take the child to Norway at any time before American courts became involved with the issues of custody and visitation.
