Legal Question in Family Law in District of Columbia
Child Support Payments
My husband has a 14 year daughter outside of our marriage. Her mother receives state financial assistance. He has taken care of the child her entire life without court intevention.
Recently, we found out that a child support order has been issued against him and it is being reported on his credit report. It is stated as hiw owing over $30K in back payments.
We were unaware of any court proceedings. He is unemployed at this present time.
We need to know what the first steps are in getting this matter resolved.
Please advise.

Re: Child Support Payments
Your husband's first step should be to contact
the state IV-D agency (in D.C it's called the Paternity and Support Branch of the D.C. Family Court)which was responsible for making this assessment against your husband based upon welfare funds which were paid to his former wife in behalf of his daughter. It may be that some sort of lower amount can be worked out in settlement of this matter.
Many people do not understand that in every jurisdiction of the United States, the payment of federal welfare monies for child support creates a debt, automatically, due and owing on the part of the non-custodial parent(s) who are responsible for the child(ren)'s support.
