Legal Question in Family Law in District of Columbia
Daughter left with father's family while I have relocated for a better job
I recently moved (9/4/07) from Washington, DC to South Carolina in search of a better job and living situation and upon doing so I made arrangements with my daughter's father's sister to care for my daughter because she wanted to finish her school year in the same school, I also left a small amout of money for her. I call her daily and in the last 10 days have been getting the run around about locating and speaking with her. My daughter's aunt wants custody of her and told me that since I abandoned her that she was going to seek full custody. I want to know if she can take my child, I call several times a day and there is always someone blocking my attempts to speak with her, and sometimes she crys because she is being told bad things about me. The aunt agreed to allow her to stay until the end of the school year and now she threatens to take her from me. I have been on several interviews and continue to look for full-time employment.

Jurisdiction will not lie in SC, so you need to seek the advice of an attorney in that area.
If you need more information, you can visit my family law blog (www.SCFamilyLaw.com) or our website (www.StevensFirm.com). I wish you the best of luck.

As the South Carolina attorney has noted, custody jurisdiction lies with DC, and if your daughter's aunt actually files for custody, you will need to return there and engage the services of an attorney to oppose this aunt's unseemly "custody grab" for your daughter.
