Legal Question in Employment Law in District of Columbia

I am a 51 year old Service Manager at a heavy equipment rental company. I have been asked to take an hourly position, mechanic from a Salary position as service manager. I have worked as service manager for over 7 years with this employer. The reason given for the reduced position is that I do not know the area well enough for this position of service manager (?). What recourse do I have legally? I have just recovered from prostrate cancer, I have heart disease and significant hearing loss. Some hearing loss I have noticed since my employment began. I am not without fault in all of this, I can be a bit rough around the edges & hard headed. This demotion will save the company $13000 annually, taking into consideration my replacements salary? Is this legal for a company to demote someone to save money?
