Legal Question in Employment Law in District of Columbia
Laid-off due to economic reason
I had just applied for a state unemployment benefits and one of the question on application form indicates - what is the name of company who laid you off?
That made me confused, because when I was originally hired, I received a letter of employment proposal and eventually hired by this same one (1) ABC Co. indicating my salary rate and other fringe benefits. But when I received my first paycheck, the name of the company who paid me was (2) XYZ Co.? Actually I did not received any formal employment letter nor I did not sign any form of employment agreement or that I am contractor working with (2) XYZ Co.
There was no verbal or written explanation that (2) XYZ Co. was my employer. All I know based on documentation, was I was hired and working full-time for (1) ABC Co.
The question therefore, is there any fraud, state or federal law violations committed by (1) ABC Co.?
Much appreciated if anyone would respond. Thank you very much.

Re: Laid-off due to economic reason
Not too likely under the circumstances described; there could be any number of explanations for the different company names including the quite common situation where XYZ simply buys out ABC.
