Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in District of Columbia

Cancelation of lease

I have 5 months left on my 1-year lease. My property manager verbally informed that the owner would like to take position of the apartment 2 months prior to the end of the lease. I have found a new apartment, but have not signed a new lease yet, and plan to move in Aug. 6. My old property manager is telling me it is too soon for me to find a new apartment, and that I may be required to fulfill the full term of the contract, or at least rent through Oct. Can he tell me that it is too soon for me to move? What course of action do I have avaiable to me?

Re: Cancelation of lease

Assuming that your lease runs through December 2005, based upon the facts which you've recounted here, the earliest which you could vacate your current unit would be the end of October 2005, if in fact you were properly informed that the landlord desired an early termination of your current lease and wished to take possession of your unit effective Nov. 1, 2005.

If in fact all of the above is true, why you would conclude that you could actually move out on August 6(without incurring sanctions) remains a puzzle.
