can my landlord contact my workplace or any other individual to callect the rent?

The landlord may contact you directly at work to collect your rent, but should not be contacting other individuals regarding this issue, at least not until a court of proper jurisdiction has entered a judgment against you for such unpaid rent amounts and the matter has been referred for collection.
