Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in District of Columbia

can my landlord just thow me out?

My cousin moved out of the apartment he was renting while I was staying with him. I talked to the landlord and he agreed to let me stay if I paid the rent. We have no written agreement, and he is holding me liable for my cousins back rent. I've been making my rent payments, but I am still behind according to him because of my cousins back rent. Today he told me to be out by the end of the week or else. I think he's the kind of guy that will move all my stuff out while I'm gone. Can he do this or does he have to evict me?

Re: can my landlord just thow me out?

If you're a bonified and legitimate tenant, the landlord must follow legal procedures to evict you; self-help is not permitted in the absence of a court order.
