Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in District of Columbia

rent went up 136% in a year!!!!!! is this leagal???

I run a very small commercial business(candy store, etc) out of the basement of an old apartment building. I have been here for 7 years...my monthly rent last year was $635.00...last year the rent was raised to $850.00...now this year, they sent me a notice to leave the premises by 6/30/07 or in 60 days because they have a higher bid for my little store. They said that the only way that I can keep it is to pay as of ''6/01/07''...$1500.00 per month. This is a 136% increase in less than a full year and even shprting the time period to pay by 30 days...this is ridiculous, absurd and must be illegal. My store won't survive too long on this hike...is there any help for me?..is there a rent control law?...there first letter informed me that since I was such a wonderful renter, they would give me 60 days instead of 30days which their lease says... please help me...what can I do???...mt

D.C. rent control would not appear applicable to your situation. Unfortunately, you appear to be a business man(or lady?) without a remedy.
