Legal Question in Real Estate Law in District of Columbia
I had a lease with a friend. I moved out and he stayed in the unit. This was in 2008. Now September 2010, i received a letter from a collection agent that last month rent was not paid as the check got returned. I ca proof that i was not in that unit and had rented that another apartment at that time. I know i was a cosigner. Is there any way i can handle this without paying as they are reporting towards my credit.

If your name is on the lease as a co-signer, you are responsible for payment of rent, whether you are physically in the unit or not.
Best of luck.*******The above is for informational purposes only and does not create at attorney-client privilege.*******
If you were on a cosigner, and the rent that was due was for a time period that lease covered, then you are responsible. It does not matter whether you lived there at the time. You could file a suit against the other renter. Regards,
