Legal Question in Real Estate Law in District of Columbia

notice to increase rent

Our landlord refuses to return our security deposit on the grounds that we did not provide 60 days notice that we were moving out. However, the reason for our move was a 40% increase in rent, which he informed us about 45 days before the termination of the lease. We did not have 60 days before our lease ended. Is there anything we can do?

Re: notice to increase rent

Hello, my name is Tiziana Ventimiglia and I am an attorney in D.C. (ph. 202/271-5983). Your facts are very simple and in the absence of other circumstances that you have not described in your message, my answer is just as simple: you can sue and have your security deposit back.

Good luck.
