Legal Question in Real Estate Law in District of Columbia

Nuisance neighbor

Greetings,

i currently live in a semi-detached home. The house that connects with my property is owned by a women whom in the last 4 years that i have resided here (and to my understanding for the last 13 years) has not cut her grass. Over the years various neighbors have voluntarily tried to keep the yard neat. I have made several complaints with the district of columbia, however the responsibility is the owners. My justification of inquiry about a possible suit is this, i purchased my home as an investment. Even if i wanted to sell my home, who in there right mind would purchase knowing that they would have to deal with such a nuisance. Please advise.

Thanks,

j. Lofton

Re: Nuisance neighbor

Yes, you may have a right of action against your neighbor for a private nuisance if she continues in her refusal to "cut the weeds", so to speak. You don't indicate which agency of the DC government you contacted, but possible violations of codes involving health and zoning regulations might conceivably be involved with this situation.
