Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in District of Columbia

probate

I have a question regarding probate in wash dc:

My uncle died without a will in 2006. His estate is filed in probate in Wash DC.

I was told by a employee in the office of probate that I cannot be added to my uncle's estate as an heir. Is this true?

if not , then what do I need to do to be added to the estate of a relative that is filed in the District

Re: probate

You should contact the personal representative

appointed by the probate court to handle your deceased uncle's estate regarding your claim.

You may need to execute and file with the court a document entitled affidavit of heirship(or something similar).
